What can you tell me about the history of Senkaku Bay and Ageshima Yuen?
In 1932, Mr Tetsugoro Wakimizu, a natural monuments investigator of the Ministry of Education and a Doctor of Science, surveyed this area and found the scenery unparalleled. He thought the beautiful coastline was equal to Norway's Hardangerfjord, and declared these East and West counterparts twins. He subsequently named the bay Senkakuwan (Senkaku Bay).
Designated as a Scenic Spot by the Ministry of Education in 1934, the bay was then incorporated into a quasi-national park in 1950.
It gained widespread recognition when the movie "Kimi no Na Wa," written by Kazuo Kikuta, was filmed here in 1953.
Senkaku Bay was designated as a Marine Park in 1971, and selected as one of Japan's Best Shores in 1996.
Are there any other points of interest nearby?
Our Directions page provides approximate travel times by car to various tourist spots on the island, including Sado Gold Mine.
Is the observation deck wheelchair accessible?
Yes, but there are inclines that definitely require assistance. Sorry, but park staff are unavailable to provide this service.
Does the glass-bottom boat operate throughout the year?
Glass-bottom boat rides are available from mid-March to late November.
Voyages last about fifteen minutes, allowing you to see both the cliffs and the underwater world up close.
Boats depart every twenty minutes, so waiting time is minimal for all travelers.
The cruising area was designated as a Marine Park in 1971, and selected as one of Japan's Best Shores in 1996.
